AN OCEAN for ALL: Where the Line is Drawn

RANEE SEOUL is pleased to invite you to its reopening celebration on March 19 with the group exhibition An Ocean for All: Where the Line Is Drawn, featuring five artists: Kun Kang, Eunu Lee, Hyungkoo Lee, Sungoo Im, and Sang-ah Choi.
For an artist, drawing and creating are the most fundamental acts of expressing their thought process in a visual language. Often, the work begins on a flat surface, such as paper, or with three-dimensional everyday objects. Occasionally, these works take on shapes that are still inchoate but provide a prophetic glimpse into the future form of the project. As this mode of ‘drawing’ unfolds through various methods and mediums, the project gradually takes form and slowly builds its own world.
An Ocean for All: Where the Line Is Drawn spotlights five artists—Kun Kang, Eunu Lee, Hyungkoo Lee, Sungoo Im, and Sang-ah Choi—who focus on ‘drawing’ as the key to their art and create works that expand upon this method.
Spanning several generations, the five artists use drawing, the first product of their thought process, as the basis of their work while fine-tuning the balance between their two-dimensional and three-dimensional projects. Their individual grammars, each stemming from different beginnings, sometimes summon memories and undergo a process of healing; sometimes project the artist’s emotions onto landscapes that are easy to overlook; and sometimes raise existential questions by using the material body as a medium or by creating intangible spaces.
In this way, each person’s private space remains in constant conversation with their surroundings, undergoing an infinite cycle of creation and destruction shaped by their language and outlook.
An Ocean for All: Where the Line Is Drawn begins with the individual artist but expands into a space for everyone, imagining a ‘collective ocean’ where each individual can coexist within a single world and remain connected to others.
Through this exhibition, RANEE SEOUL becomes a temporary place where viewers can recognize how each artist’s space, though seemingly detached, is connected to and resonates with the others in invisible ways. We hope the exhibition will also inspire an image of a single world that embraces everyone in existence.
